Two things. 1st, I called my dealer and he agreed that they would replace the damaged hose. Still like they way they treat me as a customer. I'll take it in for the 50 hour service in a few weeks and call before to remind him about the hose and get one ordered if necessary. 2nd. I also had problems getting the rockshaft arms to lift the 48 backhoe high enough to get both pins in. I got the left side pin in easily and then attached the hydraulics to use the right side outrigger to lift the 48 a hair more. Of course everything was parked on about a 5 degree slope.... haven't got a level spot on the property... that's a project for the future.

Now that I'm starting to put hours on my 4300, I need to start thinking about maintenance. Anyone have any good suggestions where I can purchase the normal things like replacement air filter, oil filter, hydraulic fliud etc.? Other that at the dealer? Just trying to reduce costs without compromising quality. Also, is anyone using synthetic oil? I've been using synthetic in my truck and car for years now and think it really helps. But I've never owned a diesel before so I'm looking for some advice. Thanks!

Hello everyone. I've ordered my John Deere 4300 with R-4 tires. I'd like some advice on something that the dealer suggested. I don't plan to fill the tires with foam nor do I plan to fill them with fluid for ballast. However, I was considering this goop the dealer suggested. Apparently it is something new that will instantly plug a hole up to 1/2 inch in diameter. My salesman said that it was demonstrated to him when he was handed a 1/2 inch punch and a hammer and asked to punch a hole in a tire that was equipped with this goop. The hole in the tire sealed instantly when the goop hit the air. Sorry for the highly technical "goop" term but I don't know what it is really called. Why would I want this? Well, my land is very rocky. Last year I had a flat on a rented Bobcat and it wasn't something I'd like to experience again. That is why this idea came to mind. I also use something like this goop in my ATV. It is routine here in South Texas to run over cactus and so far, it has kept me out of trouble with the ATV. I know that my 4300 tires and the ATV tires are a world apart but I thought the idea sound. Any thoughts you care to share? Thanks!

Hello everyone. Well, had some good ideas there. I like the idea of removing the distributor cap and that is the sort of thing I'd like to do. However, since it is a diesal, it isn't practical. However,that is the sort of thing I'm hoping for. The thought of kids messing with it gives me the willies... its my toy! and you leave it alone! :-) I guess some sort of hidden fuel shutoff or some way to remove juice from the starter will be the solution. I don't want to remove the battery because that is too easy to replace if someone really wanted it. But, I guess if they really wanted it badly enough, they'd take it anyway. Ever heard of a GPS system for theft detection? Heard a story recently about a Bobcat so equipped. It was stolen in San Antonio and taken about 100 miles north for some work. It was recovered within 2 hours of it being reported missing. Bet that is an expensive thing to have. Maybe $300 for a year's worth of insurance isn't such a bad deal after all... If anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks to everyone responding so far!

Hi! Can someone tell me how I can find out the latest serial numbers of recently produced JD Compact Tractors? I'm about to order a new 4300 and after reading all the info on this site, I know I need to get a new one and not one that has been sitting on someone's lot for months. Soon as I figure this out, I'm on my way to the dealer! Thanks!
